With only limited space inside your van you want to create multiple uses for every bit of space whenever possible. A common concept in campers and RVs is to allow the sitting area and the table top to transform into a bed. You can do the same for around $50 and a weekend.
I always intended the van to stay as modular as possible on the inside so that I can customize it to fit my needs in the future. There was only one set of interior furniture that I knew was going to be there permanently: two benches. These benches will provide additional seating now that I lost about ¾ of the original seating capacity in the process of adding the new floor. Furthermore, they are going to open up and provide a massive amount of storage for tools, kayak equipment, and the solar battery bank.
This first step in converting the van into a livable space is to put new flooring down. This meant leveling the floor and running easily cleanable vinyl on top of that. I knew that I needed the floor to be fairly rugged and function as a base for future projects in order to make the camper van dream a reality.
